Things to Do Near Roquebrune Sur Argens

About Roquebrune sur Argens

Calm river with green trees and rocky mountains under a bright blue sky.

The recorded history of the oldest part of the town of Roquebrune-sur-Argens began around 983. Signs of human settlements, from the local "Bouverian culture", dating from Prehistory, were found in caves near La Bouverie.

Roquebrune-sur-Argens is a versatile French Riviera destination, blending a historic medieval village, the striking red sandstone Rock of Roquebrune, and the coastal district of Les Issambres. It is renowned for outdoor activities in Roquebrune, such as hiking, kayaking on the Argens river, and various water sports, alongside a vibrant local culture featuring Provençal markets, wine tasting in Provence, and proximity to the Massif des Maures.

Key Highlights and Popular Attractions:

- The Rocher de Roquebrune: A 372-meter high, iconic red rock formation that dominates the landscape, popular for hiking and rock climbing, offering panoramic views of the Argens valley.

- Les Issambres: The coastal part of the town, featuring beaches, a marina with boat links to Saint-Tropez, and opportunities for scuba diving.

- Medieval Village Center: Known for its narrow streets, 16th-century porticos, and the "Maison du Patrimoine" (Heritage House), which highlights the area's history.

- Outdoor and Watersports: Renowned for canoeing and kayaking on the Argens River, as well as being a hub for mountain biking, horseback riding, and hiking in the surrounding Massif des Maures.

Gastronomy and Markets: Famous for Friday morning markets in the old town, offering local products like wine, honey, olive oil, and Provençal specialties.

- Activities: The area is a hub for the National Water Skiing Centre and features several golf courses.

57 Domain Des Baux is located just a 10 to 15-minute drive from the Mediterranean, with plenty of public beaches available in St. Aygulf,

St. Maxime, Les Issambres, Frejus, and St. Raphael.

Frejus, often referred to as the 'French Pompeii,' is an ancient Roman town founded by Julius Caesar around 49 BC. Visitors can explore old Roman ruins, including an amphitheater and aqueduct, as well as the Old Frejus Cathedral, built between the 5th and 14th centuries, along with its cloister, which is a must-see. If history isn't your thing, a walk from the old town to Port Frejus and along the Mediterranean coast, lined with lively bars, clubs, and restaurants, is also worth the trip. For those interested in outdoor activities, there are plenty of options nearby, including pedalo rentals, jet skiing, parasailing, boat hires for a day of sea fishing, and scuba diving.

In the summer, the night market along the seafront between Frejus and St. Raphael features numerous stalls and street performers, making it another great outing.

Additionally, for wine tasting in Provence, the region offers some delightful vineyards to explore.

The South of France is well-served by Uber and Bolt, along with excellent public transport links, making getting around a breeze.

Sunny day at a bustling marina with people dining and walking along the waterfront.

St Tropez is a 40-minute drive; however, during High Season, it's advisable to avoid the drive as it can take much longer. A better option is to head to St Raphael and take le Bateaux Bleu, which is reasonably priced and offers a scenic boat ride along the coast to St Tropez. They also provide boat trips to Cannes from St Raphael, making it a great way to explore Roquebrune Sur Argens attractions via the water.

The beautiful cities of Cannes, Nice, and the Principality of Monaco are just a short distance away, while the Italian border is only an hour and a half's drive. I recommend taking the Coastal Train from St Raphael, as it’s much less hassle and offers stunning views.

If you're looking for outdoor activities, having a car allows you to explore the breathtaking Gorges du Verdon and the Lavender Fields on the Valensole Plateau, which are particularly stunning if you visit Provence in June or July. Additionally, don't miss the chance for the wine tasting Provence has to offer, as it's a fantastic way to experience the local culture.

There are numerous vineyards nearby, some within walking distance, that offer tours and wine tasting in Provence. Notable Vineyards include Domaine Des Planes, Domaine Des Marchandise, Chateau Vaudois, and the Whispering Angel Vineyard, all of which are worth a visit. While enjoying these vineyards, make sure you have a nominated driver.
